prednisone

I’ve been here before but could never post so I wrote to Jean and had her take me off.  But I have a question so I’m trying this again.  I have been on prednisone for 3 yr.  I have had a chronic disease, sarcoidosis, for 30yr.  For 25 yr. I ingnored it because I did not want to take prednisone.  After lots of complications I went back on it.  My question is, “What do you do with the HUNGER of prednisone?”  Someone has described it as being hungry as a wolf.  How can you use NT in this situation.

I really just wanted to know about the hunger with larger doses.  I’m on a reduced dose right now but never know if I might need more.  I rarely go to the doctor as I am uninsured.  My DH is a veterinarian and can test my blood.  I also take fosomax so that might help the bones.  Actually it is for lowering blood calcium which nearly ruined my kidneys 3 years ago.  As for muscle mass, I have no idea.  Sarcoidosis is small tumors in the lungs that causes reduced lung function.  The tumors can be any where in the body but the lungs is the main place.  High blood calcium is another thing those little tumors cause.  I also have 10 kids so that was a struggle as to weight loss also.  I’ve always had abdominal fat since my first child but the prednisone seems to make it worse.  All these things have always made me think I should go on a DIET and so do others in the family.  They think this NT thing is a joke.

Jean will be able to answer this more definitively, but it seems to me that some drugs can interfere with NT progress because they change our hunger awareness.  If you can’t get clear readings on hunger and fullness signals, you can’t do NT effectively.

sterioids and weight

Cortisone and other steroids can increase hunger and promote fluid retention at certain doses, and often do.  The questions you ask should be answered by a physician.  You may also get specific information about side effects of any medications from your pharamacist.  The internet is another resource for information on drugs, medical conditions and symptoms.  Drugs that affect appetite do interfere with recovery for some people applying the Naturally Thin principles.  That doesn’t mean you should not apply them.

Jean Antonello

After 30 yr. of dealing with this, doctors only give you diets to combat the weight gain of prednisone.  The first doctor I had 30 yr. ago said, “Oh, you might try losing a little weight.”  That was after a weight gain of 40lb after being naturally thin.

hunger on prednisone

The excess hunger caused by drugs can make the weight loss part of NT recovery impossible.  This is because of the biochemical interference with the body signals due to the drug.  This is why weight gain is so common with certain drugs, and so difficult/impossible to reverse.  Still, it is better to eat on time, quality and variety foods, than to eat carelessly or diet by traditional restrictive methods.
Sincerely,
Jean

After a long time not being here,  I just want to let you know I lost 40lb.  I still have about 30 to go but have been stuck for more than a year.  I’m so glad to be forty pound less that most of the time I don’t think about it.  I really do more of intuitive eating now than naturally thin.

Hi Carol,

I’ve wondered from time to time what became of you. Glad to see you are still around. Isn’t Intuitive Eating a lot like NT?

Thanks,

Kelcy

With intuitive eating, there are no good or bad foods.

And you believe this has helped you lose forty pounds?

Once you legalize all foods, you’d be surprised how quickly you get tired of them.  I used to love Cadbury with almonds bars and now I’ve had one in the cupboard for 2 weeks.  It was a gift from my daughter.

Hi Carol,

Nice to hear from you.  On the issue of “good food” and “bad food,” I agree that lifting the bans may lead a committed ex-dieter to tire of these foods.  The three food groups of NT are there for those who want to minimize the initial gain and to practice, from the start, making the best choices.  The NT food guidelines are optional, as I try to remind people.  The choices are entirely up to individuals and each person must decide for herself what foods she chooses to eat, based on her goals.

I’m so happy for you!  It sounds like you’ve found the perfect fit and you’re on your way to freedom—from eating obsessions and from excess weight Thanks for your post and for keeping in touch.

Jean

You’re an inspiration Carol!  Thanks for sharing your journey!  Nothing helps those new to NT as much as success stories - at least they help ME.
