Comparison of two books

Jean,
I’d be interested in your take on the differences between the Breaking out of Food Jail book and your NT book.  I’ve read them both, but am more drawn to NT.  I think I’ve read it 4 times at least.  Food Jail I have read once, maybe twice.  It seemed to me to focus more on recovering from eating disorders than NT, and since I have not struggled with eating disorders, it didn’t hit home with me as much.  What were your goals in writing this second book?

differences between the books

Melissa,
I wrote Breaking Out of Food Jail because of the amazing numbers of women I coached who had developed very disturbed eating patterns, and some frank eating disorders, as a result of dieting.  I also discovered that those whose eating patterns were the most extreme often did the best in recovery by Naturally Thin principles.  Maybe they were the most scared, or more desperate, I don’t know.  So, How to Become… was directed to the chronic, long term dieter and Breaking… was more for dieters who got more extreme in their eating swings.  However, the basic ideas and prescription for recovery those in both books is the same.  Undereating is the culprit and eating well and eating on time is the prescription.
I do acknowledge that some people with eating disorders require medical intervention and support for recovery and often cannot recover fully.  This is why I wrote Breaking Out of Food Jail.
Sincerely,
Jean Antonello
