Going to read this book

I have NT Kids.  I have had it for some time.  I started reading it when I first got it, but didn’t get too far.  I need to pick it up again and see what Jean has to say about feeding our kids.

I have two girls, ages 9 and 6.  Mercifully, they neither show any tendency toward being overweight.  I was already having weight issues by age 9.  I think I hit the 100 lb mark during 3rd grade.  I’m very grateful that they seem to have inherited their dad’s metabolism.  Having said that, I want to make sure that I teach them the skills they need to have a healthy relationship with food and that they can eat NT principles for the rest of their lives, never getting into a serious weight problem.  (I also have an infant son, but right now I think he’s doing great on his eating.  Nurse, nurse, nurse.  :D )

So, I just wanted to publicly commit to reading the book and addressing these principles as they pertain to my daughters.

Has anyone else read this book yet?

preventing weight and dieting in kids, especially daughters

Hi Melissa,
I appreciate your commitment to reading Naturally Thin Kids.  Even though your daughters are thin now, they are exposed to and vulnerable to all kinds of wierd and unhealthy messages from the culture and you are a wise mom to prepare yourself now to help them avoid falling into the pitfal of dieting, crazy body images, reckless eating patterns and even eating disorders.
I want to know what you think of the book, so please give a review!
Sincerely,
Jean Antonello

I read the book and really liked all the “how to’s” it included.  Specific ideas and examples really helped out.

My goal right now is to let my kids tell me what and when they want to eat.  We don’t have sweets and any food they ask for is really on the OK list so it’s just a matter of me serving it up, or reminding them to eat.  Also letting them eat what they want and not making them finish things before they get something else.

For example:  At dinner, I served Meatloaf and green beans…my son loves the meatloaf and ate a lot, then all of his beans…my daughter would not eat her meatloaf and asked for apples and pears instead…so what to do?  I cut her up an apple!  I still asked her to just taste the meatloaf so she has a chance for the future to know if she really likes the taste or not…but I did not make her eat it all.

Hope this helps,
